Surface reflectance of Mars observed by CRISM/MRO: 1. Multiangle Approach for Retrieval of Surface Reflectance from CRISM observations (MARSReCO)

چکیده
[1] This article addresses the correction for aerosol effects in near-simultaneous multiangle observations acquired by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. In the targeted mode, CRISM senses the surface of Mars using 11 viewing angles, which allow it to provide unique information on the scattering properties of surface materials. In order to retrieve these data, however, appropriate strategies must be used to compensate the signal sensed by CRISM for aerosol contribution. This correction is particularly challenging as the photometric curve of these suspended particles is often correlated with the also anisotropic photometric curve of materials at the surface. This article puts forward an innovative radiative transferbased method named Multi-angle Approach for Retrieval of Surface Reflectance from CRISM Observations (MARS-ReCO). The proposed method retrieves photometric curves of surface materials in reflectance units after removing aerosol contribution. MARS-ReCO represents a substantial improvement regarding previous techniques as it takes into consideration the anisotropy of the surface, thus providing more realistic surface products. Furthermore, MARS-ReCO is fast and provides error bars on the retrieved surface reflectance. The validity and accuracy of MARS-ReCO is explored in a sensitivity analysis based on realistic synthetic data. According to experiments, MARS-ReCO provides accurate results (up to 10% reflectance error) under favorable acquisition conditions. In the companion article, photometric properties of Martian materials are retrieved using MARS-ReCO and validated using in situ measurements acquired during the Mars Exploration Rovers mission.

CRISM multispectral summary products: Parameterizing mineral diversity on Mars from reflectance
[1] The Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) is the most recent spectrometer to arrive at Mars. The instrument is a hyperspectral imager covering visible to near-infrared wavelengths (0.37–3.92 mm at 6.55 nm/channel). Summary products based on multispectral parameters will be derived from reflectances in key wavelengths for ev...
متن کاملCrism Observations of Water Vapor and Carbon Monoxide
Introduction: Near-infrared spectra returned by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM, [1]) on-board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) contain the clear spectral signature of several atmospheric gases including carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapor (H2O), and carbon monoxide (CO). Here we describe the seasonal and spatial mapping of water vapor and carbon dioxide for o...
متن کاملWater Sorption on Martian Regolith Analogs: Near-infrared Reflectance
Introduction: Due to large variations of both surface temperature and amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, relative humidity at the Martian surface is subject to variations of several orders of magnitude. As a result, minerals of the regolith that are in direct contact with the atmosphere are susceptible to adsorb and desorb water over diurnal and seasonal cycles [1,2,3]. Near-infrared refl...

We present morphologic observations and spectral modeling results of a large, kaolin-group mineral-bearing deposit within Kashira crater in the southern highlands of Mars. We employ both non-linear unmixing of Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) visible to near-infrared (VNIR) reflectance data and linear unmixing of Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) thermal infrared (...
